Perkins is a brand of the Caterpillar group specialized in the manufacture of diesel engines founded in 1932 by Frank Perkins. Caterpillar group has become one of the world's leading suppliers of diesel and gas engines.


It aims to set standards of engineering excellence, providing the most comprehensive range of innovative and reliable power solutions.

Across the ranges, Perkins engines are designed to meet all emission standards and performance requirements in more than 800 applications.

All of them can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of individual equipment manufacturers.

    Perkins is established by Frank Perkins.

  • 1936


    Perkins grows in stature and volume, producing 556 engines during the year.

  • 1947


    Perkins opens its new manufacturing facility in Eastfield, Peterborough (UK).

  • 1959


    Perkins is acquired by its largest customer Massey Ferguson.

  • 1969


    Annual worldwide production tops 350.000 units, establishing Perkins as a leader in its power sector.

  • 1998


    Caterpillar Inc acquires Perkins engines Company Limited for $1,3 billion creating the world’s largest diesel engine manufacturer.

  • 2001


    Launch of the super quiet, Tier 2 400 Series engines along with the 1100 Series range of 3,4 and 6 cylinder engines offering more customer choice with electronic or mechanical routes to emissions compliance.

  • 2004

    The 350,000th engine in the compact power range (100/400 series) is built and Perkins looks back at more than 15 million engines and satisfied users.

  • 2011


    Looking ahead to the future, Perkins unveils its first tier 4 Final engine – the 400F.

  • 2019


    Following a significant investment in hybrid engines and electrification research, Perkins is showing a range of technologies that will add real value to Original Equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as they design the next generation of Off-Road machines.
